Место заточения знаменитого литературного узника Эдмона Дантеса находится в миле от Марселя, на острове Иф, входящем во Фриульский архипелаг. Мощный замок был построен в первой трети XVI века для обороны города от морских атак. В 1580 году крепость превратили в тюрьму для особо опасных заключённых.
Арестантские функции замка Иф закончились только в конце XIX века, после чего древнее строение было признано историческим памятником и открыто для посещений.
За всё время тюремной работы замок Иф принял в своих стенах несколько тысяч человек. Были среди них и известные исторические персоны – граф де Мирабо, генерал Клебер и родной брат Людовика XIV («человек в железной маске»).
Замок Иф представляет собой трёхэтажный четырёхугольник, шириной в двадцать восемь метров. По краям строения располагаются три круглые башни, снабжённые большими амбразурами. Самая высокая, северо-западная башня замка Иф посвящена Святому Кристофу, оставшиеся две носят названия Святого Жауме (северо-восточная) и Могувер (юго-восточная). Между собой башни соединяются широкой террасой. Тюремные камеры располагаются на нижних этажах замка, казематы – на верхних. Справа от крепости находится построенное в 1702 году караульное здание.
Посетить замок Иф можно, купив билет на катер в Старом Порту Марселя. Рейсы осуществляются каждые пятнадцать-двадцать минут летом и каждые полтора часа – зимой. Стоимость поездки составляет десять евро. По замку Иф проводятся организованные экскурсии. Туристам предлагается осмотреть камеры Дантеса (на первом этаже) и «человека в железной маске» (на втором) и всю территорию крепости. В замке Иф работает кафе, откуда открывается прекрасный вид на Марсель.

 The place of an imprisonment of the well-known literary prisoner Edmon Dantes is in mile from Marseille, on the island If entering the Friulsky archipelago. The powerful lock was constructed in the first third of the XVI century for defense of the city against sea attacks. In 1580 fortress was turned into prison for especially dangerous prisoners.

Prisoner functions of Château d'If ended only at the end of the XIX century then the ancient structure was recognized as a historical monument and is opened for visits.

Château d'If took for all the time of prison work in the walls some thousands of people. There were among them also famous historical persons – the count de Mirabo, the general Kleber and the brother of Louis XIV ("the person in an iron mask").

Château d'If represents a three-storyed quadrangle, twenty eight meters wide. At the edges of a structure three round towers supplied with big embrasures settle down. The highest, northwest tower of Château d'If is devoted to Saint Christoph, remained two carry names Sacred to Zhauma (northeast) and Moguver (southeast). Among themselves towers connect a wide terrace. Prison cells settle down on first floors of the lock, casemates – on top. To the right of fortress there is a guard building built in 1702.

It is possible to visit Château d'If, having bought the boat ticket in Old Porto of Marseille. Flights are carried out each fifteen-twenty minutes in the summer and everyone an hour and a half – in the winter. The cost of a trip makes ten euros. On Château d'If organized tours are conducted. Tourists are offered to examine Dantes's cameras (on the first floor) and "the person in an iron mask" (on the second) and all territory of fortress. In Château d'If the cafe works, the beautiful view of Marseille from where opens.
