The longest ancient Roman aqueduct in Europe is in the small Spanish town of Segovia. Along with other historical objects, since 1985 this monument is included into the list of the World heritage ЮНЕСКО.Дата of construction of an aqueduct is definitely not known. Allegedly it occurred in the 1st century of our era at the emperor Vespasiana. The aqueduct located on Plaza de Azoguejo Square blows the mind fantastically beautiful forms and graceful proportions. 166 two-story arches are put from 20 400 granite blocks without use of any connecting solution. It is the most known and majestic monument in Segovia.
The aqueduct was constructed by Romans for water supply of the underground channels connecting the city and the mountain small river in 17 km from it. The construction is a land piece of a long ancient water supply system. Reviver for many years regularly came to Segovia already on a stone trench. Length of an aqueduct makes 728 meters, and height in the maximum part – 28 m.
Three highest arches after the end of construction were noted by bronze images. Up to now remained two of them – on the different parties of a monument: Heracles Egipetsky's image (if to trust the legend, he is the founder of the city) and the image of the Maiden Fuensisla (the patroness of the city).
In 1884 the ancient aqueduct was declared by a monument of national property. Its restoration works began in 1997 under the leadership of the Spanish architect Francis Jurado. Before their termination Plaza Azoguejo Square received the status of the pedestrian zone.
