The funicular in Odessa

The history of the Odessa funicular began at the beginning of the XX century. Two cars with a capacity of 35 people everyone which are written out from Paris connected the top part of the city with port. In those days Odessa funicular near the Potyomkinsky ladder became one of the first funiculars in Russia. It was constructed according to the "classical" scheme – the single-line rail line with travel. The movement was carried out according to the "pendular" scheme when the going-down car helped the car moving up. In such look the Odessa funicular existed 67 years, transporting passengers from the boulevard to the port for invariable 2 kopeks.
History
The huge, nowadays Potemkinsky ladder opened in 1841 at first was rather a part of an architectural complex, than was used directly. The port working people went to the port to work, generally from Peresypi or on descents to the Military (now Zhanna Lyaburb), to Levashovsky (then Vakulenchuka) later Devolanovsky, Polish (Kanguna).
Over time the number of the people wishing to get to the Odessa port and on Primorskaya Street from the downtown increased. It was promoted by opening of railway communication from port on the Kuyalnitsky estuary where as Yury Olesha remembered in the book "Not a day without a line", "there was a train conducted by the small engine which was called as a boiler. The small, quickly whistling engine, five-six green cars …" Besides on Primorskaya Street near port the set of "institutions of the heat sea baths" mentioned in "Notebooks" of Ilya Ilf opened: "When everything in Odessa will collapse, sea bathtubs will still shine and be poured by light. Inhabitants of Odessa love sea bathtubs".
In 1880, considering an environment, an attempt to create concession for the device of a railway lifting line from pier on the boulevard, come to grief was made.
This idea earned in 1895 when the young engineer N. K. Pyatnitsky, the graduate of the Petersburg institute of engineers of means of communication, the son of the director of the Second Odessa gymnasium, submitted to town council the application about "granting to it a construction and operation of a mechanical lifting way from Primorskaya Street on the boulevard". The tempted with Pyatnitsky's proposal, city authorities nevertheless announced competition through local and capital newspapers.

The tempted with Pyatnitsky's proposal, city authorities nevertheless announced competition through local and capital newspapers.
Only one Parisian firm which submitted only the outline sketch which isn't attached to the district responded. According to the conclusion of the engineer V. Zuyev, famous in the city, the preference was given to Pyatnitsky.
In 1900-1902 planned a slope under the route of future funicular, laid a single-track railway line about hundred meters long with travel in the middle and the transitional bridge over it, constructed wooden openwork pavilion in the boulevard, the stone building with cash desk, the platform and office on Primorskaya Street, and nearby small power plant, collected and fixed on cables two cars delivered from Paris to 35 passengers everyone, established 300 kalilnykh of lamps and arc lamps for lighting of the road. Works were performed under the leadership of the engineer V. Rakovsky.
The ceremonial opening of the lifting road took place on June 8, 1902. Next day it accepted the first passengers, and as noted "The Odessa leaf", "persons interested to test convenience of the movement was very much".
"Funicular. If in Odessa to say this word, nobody will understand about what there is a speech – Leonid Utyosov in the book "Thanks, Heart" wrote, – it call "hoist engine". For the second time the Great Patriotic War stopped the funicular. Four years after war I didn't work. In 1948 in Odessa "works on restoration of the funicular began". "Having hardly recovered the breath" from war, the city restored the funicular which Valentin Katayev ranked as sights of Odessa. In twenty years, in 1969, the funicular was closed. In 1970 it was replaced with the escalator. Without having solved thus any transport problem as it was also not.
From the face of Odessa for thirty five years it was erased one more lovely city boundaries which with grief inhabitants of Odessa remembered. In the last year existence of the USSR the escalator still worked in both parties. At the very beginning of the 1990th – already only in one, on rise. The escalator on descent gradually was disassembled on the spare part, and so supported work though in one direction.
Finally it became useless and was closed in 1997.

In 1998 the city authority decided to construct on the Potemkinsky ladder the new funicular by the principle of inclined elevators and allocated money. Unfinished construction of eight years turned out. And in 2005 the Odessa funicular earned again.
The ceremonial opening of the revived funicular on two cars on ten cheloveko-places took place on September 2, 2005 at the two hundred eleventh birthday of Odessa.

Kiev from an observation deck

Kiev. Area Obolon.
--------------
At the beginning of our era when continuous settling of Oboloni became possible, her inhabitants were engaged in cultivation of a livestock: horses, dogs, sheep, goats, hens, pigs, partridges, bulls. Among the wild nature bisons, deer, elks, boars, beavers met. And the diverse fish was found in reservoirs: catfishes, pikes, sturgeons, sazans, karpovy, pike perches. They decorated a daily table of our ancestors.
On Oboloni the largest settlement of ancient Slavs who stood at the origins of the basis of Kiev was revealed. Archaeological materials testify that early Slavs had a standard of living high the then. They in perfection mastered technology of production of products from bronze, iron and ceramics. Besides ancient inhabitants of Oboloni conducted active exchange communications with the antique cities of Northern Black Sea Coast.
In pagan times for ways to obolonsky meadows there was an idol of god Velez, patron of pets. The cattle was associated with wealth and prosperity therefore inhabitants of Kiev especially honored this deity. Оболонь was a favourite place of hunting and rest of the Kiev princes.
On Oboloni there were many streams and the rivers. Among them the best-known Pochayna and Setomlya. It were rather deep rivers. On Pochayna there was the Kiev harbor — Prityka. Exactly here ambassadors and merchants from the different countries came on the castles. Many pecheneg during fight with Yaroslavovy army sank in Setomle in 1034. The chronicle gives us the interesting fact which happened in 1065 on Setomle's small river. The fisherman catching fish pulled out some being at whom the whole day I came to watch the curious people in a seine.
There was time and Oboloni's earth became so prestigious that many sought to catch them. Besides in disputes for borders of plots reached not only judicial proceedings, and and a manhandling. Documents in which land misunderstanding between petty bourgeoises, monasteries and magistrate were solved by the top officials of the power remained. Justice on Oboloni was directed by hetmen Bogdan Khmelnytsky and Ivan Mazepa, the tsar Alexey Mikhaylovich and Peter I.
Every year at the beginning of August a great number of pilgrims went to Vyshgorod to honor memory of the Kiev princes Boris and Gleb. Choosing the shortest way through Obolon inhabitants of Kiev sometimes were compelled to overcome water barriers: streams, small lakes, bogs. Often petty bourgeoises and merchants used Obolon for a smuggling transportation. So in 1774 petty bourgeoises Blistovoytsev and Katolichenko trying to take illegally to Kiev French wine were detained near the Jordanian lake, on an outpost. In 1811, in the morning on July 9 on the Hem the heavy fire began. People in a panic from the remains of the rescued good ran to Obolon. The city burned three days. And Podolsk fire victims were compelled to live in tents, with tears observing death of the favourite city. Among the victims there was a famous Kiev preacher and the writer Ioann Levanda who shared a fate of all citizens. The hearing that the fire arose not incidentally consolidated desire of many still to live on Oboloni until everything is settled.
In 1897 on the Obolonsky gulf construction of harbor of the Emperor Nicholas II on the project of the famous engineer Nicolay Maksimovich began. After completion of construction in 1899, the audit commission made check which vyyavivit a number of shortcomings. According to auditors construction was conducted carelessly. As a result of all omissions the loss for city cash desk made about hundred thousand rubles.
At the beginning of the century on Oboloni there were fishing settlements. On the weekend who on foot and who by boats arrived to a meadow to hunt and fish or simply to have a rest from city life.
In 1939 within the defensive program on Oboloni confidential construction was developed. The project provided a construction near Dnieper of the podruslovy railroad. About 12 thousand people worked at construction. But in 1941 war began and all works were curtailed far before end. Now in Natalk's natural boundary reminds a huge ferroconcrete caisson of this utopian project — a silent monument of those years.
Archaeological researches, documentary sources reveal new secrets of history of Oboloni. It is the integral and bright part of historical, cultural and spiritual heritage of our city.
Khreschatik. Kiev.

A Khreschatik) — the main street of Kiev. Length — 1,3 km, the direction — from the North to the south. Begins from Evropeyskaya Square, passes through square of Independence and comes to an end with Bessarabskaya Square. The name of the street happens from Creshchatogo Jara (that is crossed by cross beams ravines). In documents of the XVII century all this district was called as the Kreshchaty Valley. The street is created at the beginning of the XIX century. Till this time the district along Dnieper where Vladimir Veliky christened the members of household (now there passes Naberezhno-Kreshchatitskaya Street) was called as the Khreshchatyk [1]. There is a version that in this district the small river Khreshchatyk which was inflow of Dnieper flew.
At the time of Kievan Rus' the district on a place of a present Khreshchatyk represented the valley covered with the wood on which the stream proceeded. The valley was a hunting place where inhabitants of Kiev outweighed grids for a catch of a wild animal (the ancient name of the district from here — "Perevesishche"). The stream which near Basseynaya Street merged with the Klovsky stream (falling into Lybed) followed from the lake near present square of Independence. Along a stream the way on Cornflowers lay.
Before World War II the Khreshchatyk was built up with buildings, generally in 3-4 floors which stood a continuous facade. Width of the street made about 35 meters.
In 1876 the building of City Council is built here; In 1892 — the first in the Russian Empire line of the electric tram which connected the Khreshchatyk with the Hem is laid.
In 1936 the street was asphalted, the tram was replaced with trolleybus.

During the period from May 14, 1923 to July 13, 1937 the street bore a name of Václav Vorovsky. During occupation of Kiev in 1941-43 Germans renamed the street into Aykhgornshtrasse (in honor of the field marshal Hermann von Eichgorn).
On September 24, 1941, in some days after occupation of Kiev by the German troops on the Khreshchatyk a series of explosions began (ammunition was put by People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs at retreat from the city). [2] The first "Toy Store" (architect V. V. Gorodetsky) at the corner of the Khreshchatyk and Pro-carved blew up, from a blast wave ammunitions and in other buildings detonated. Explosions and followed then the fires were so powerful that the downtown burned out completely and during war wasn't restored. In some days, on September 27-29, 1941, the commandant of Kiev Curt Eberhard used the Khreshchatyk arson as a formal reason for destruction of Jews of Kiev in Babi Yar.
After war the decision anew to build up the center was made, having kept a configuration of streets, however buildings were built absolutely new, in style of "a Stalin empire style".
The street is built up as a uniform architectural complex. Width of the Khreshchatyk is increased to 75 meters. The profile of the street is asymmetric — the carriageway 24 meters, two sidewalks on 14 meters everyone separated from the carriageway by a number of trees and the boulevard (chestnut) on the right side which separate a housing estate from the carriageway.
Since the end of the 1990th in days off and holidays traffic on the Khreshchatyk is forbidden — the street for this time becomes foot.
