Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, USA.

San Francisco – one of the most popular cities in the world. Its main sight is the well-known Golden Gate Bridge thrown through the passage of the same name connecting the gulf San Francisco to the Pacific Ocean.

The Golden Gate Bridge connects the southern part of the Californian district of Marin and the city of San Francisco located in the north of the peninsula of the same name. Golden Gate is a suspension bridge, its carriageway is suspended by means of steel cables and ropes. Length of the bridge is equal 1970 meters, length of the main flight — 1280 meters, height of support — 230 meters, and distance from water to the carriageway equally to 67 meters.

Construction of the bridge was conducted four years from 1933 to 1937. It was not the simplest time for economy – time of the Great depression. Besides, the city was hardly restored from consequences of a terrible earthquake in 1906.

Joseph Strouss – the recognized world genius in construction of bridges became the chief project engineer. Hundreds of his grandiose ideas are realized worldwide. Joseph Strouss was helped by the architect Irving Morrou and Charles Alton Ellis who made everything mathematical calculations.

On May 27, 1937 the bridge through the passage Golden Gate was solemnly open. It became the biggest suspension bridge in the world and remained such up to 1964 when it was bypassed by Verrazano Bridge in New York.
