Saint Stephane's cathedral, Austria

The Vienna Catholic Cathedral of Saint Stephane is a national symbol of Austria. The majestic structure on which construction left without small two centuries (the building was under construction from 1359 to 1511), is in the center of the Austrian capital – on Svyatogo Stefana Square, in the Old city. Today in it the chair of the Vienna archbishop settles down, church services are daily carried out.

The first mention of Saint Stephane's Cathedral belongs to 1137. In the XII century the Catholic temple carried on itself a pronounced print of Romance style. After cardinal reorganization in the XIV-XVI centuries it became completely Gothic. In the XVII century Baroque style popular at that time got into interiors of a cathedral.

Saint Stephane's cathedral has two towers: Northern, unfinished, sixty eight meters high, and Southern, towering over the earth on hundred thirty six meters. On an observation deck of the Southern tower with which the tremendous panorama of Vienna and vicinities opens, conduct three hundred forty three steps. On the Northern tower there is the biggest bell of the country – "Pummerin" (weight more than twenty one tons and with a diameter over three meters) calling eleven times a year on great holidays. It is the second-large bell of Europe (after the Cologne cathedral). In the rest of the time other bells located mainly in a belfry of the Southern tower are used.

Saint Stephane's cathedral costs on catacombs in which about eleven thousand people including some generations Gabsburgov are buried. In the temple there is a huge number of religious and cultural relics: Saint Ioann Kapistran's chair, sundial, medieval iron measures, Pyochsky wonder-working icon of the Virgin, gravestone of Frederick III and prince Evgeny Savoysky. Tours on Saint Stephane's Cathedral are conducted daily in morning (9.00 – 11.30) and after-dinner (13.00 – 16.30) hours on weekdays and in after-dinner hours – on days off. Survey of the Northern and Southern tower is carried out since morning (8.30-9.00) and till the evening (17-18).
