Central station of Helsinki, Finland

The central station of Helsinki (Helsingin p äärautatieasema) is considered not only the main transport knot of Finland, but also the recognized European monument of architecture pleasing the passengers with functionality and monumental beauty.

Constructed at the beginning of the XX century (construction time: 1904 – 1914, commissioning – 1919) on the project of the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen (Eliel Saarinen) the central station of Helsinki incorporated the main cultural and historical tendencies of the time. The building built from the Finnish granite reflected in the refined geometrical forms architectural transition from national romantic style to constructivism, from political dependence of Finland on the Russian Empire to independence and freedom of the country. Thus the sharp cultural separation in the Helsinki station didn't come from tendencies of new Russian architecture, and he repeated in himself those lines which are familiar to us on the Soviet buildings a post of the revolutionary period. The general design solidity, severity in a choice of the correct geometrical forms, lack of decorative elements of registration and laconicism of the main ideas of an era of images chosen for expression do the Central station of Helsinki by a characteristic example of constructivist architecture.

The passengers wishing to use services of the station are met on an entrance by four Atlases with lamps in hands. Their founder is the famous sculptor Emil Vikstryom (Emil Wikström). Grandiose sculptures as if speak to all entering the building of the station: "We will light your way where you went!". And it is possible to go from the station anywhere – trains of both suburban, and distant following go from here. The station is closely connected with the main station of the Helsinki subway – "Rautatiyentori Square".
